Planning Your Perfect Halloween Wedding

Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore. More and more adults are embracing all things spooky on All Hallows Eve, according to a major retail survey.

Already the nation’s second most popular holiday, Halloween enjoys even more popularity each year due to increasing adult participation in the form of dressing up or decorating their homes. Your Halloween theme wedding is sure to be a scream for the growing numbers of guests who embrace the spirit of the season.

Halloween-wedding-and-bride

Glowing candles, grinning pumpkins and a moonlit night. What a great beginning for a Halloween Wedding. Most people can easily turn a Halloween party into a wedding, but consider adding some polish to this special night. Here are some suggestions that pair a touch of elegance with pure Halloween fun.
Awfully Creepy Attire
Bride: A slim fitting dress in the “Morticia – Addams Family style” would work nicely. You many also choose to have your gown died black or red. Add a black cape with red lining, black veil and long, sleek black gloves.
Bridesmaids: Slim fitting black, red, orange or yellow dresses with matching capes. Instead of a regular neckline, consider having a seamstress add a high, stiff collar to frame their faces. Use tiara’s in their hair or matching ribbons.
Groom and groomsmen: Black tuxedos with red cummerbunds. Another option would be black shirts, black slacks and a red-lined black cape with high collar.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Ideas

halloween-party-ideas

Are you up to the challenge? A scavenger hunt is probably one of the most popular party games on Halloween. Not only does it get your guests out and about, it gives them the opportunity to show off their costumes.

These tips should give you some good ideas for planning your own creepy scavenger hunt on Halloween. Save your ideas and lists for future hunts or swap them with friends and neighbors next year.
Pick a Theme
You can use individual themes for your hunt, such as vampires, mummies, etc. The list will need to be according to the theme. For example, a vampire theme would have items such as a wooden stake, cross etc. Keep in mind that specific themes will limit your list.
Identify Your Teams
After dividing your guests into teams, allow them to chose a team name. Fun names such as "The Monsters," "The Mummies," and "The Ghouls" will make the game more fun.
Use Your Yard
If your scavenger hunt is for children, you will probably need to limit the hunt area. Consider using your own yard and hide the items on the list outdoors. Make sure your yard is clean and safe. Don't leave any rakes or objects laying around that they may trip over and make sure you provide adequate lighting
Alert the Neighborhood
Whether the hunt will involve the neighbors or be limited to your own yard, it's best to let the neighborhood know that you will be having a scavenger hunt on Halloween -- and the approximate time it will be. This way, they can be available to answer the door for items and they won't be alarmed at any ghouls roaming about near their backyard.
Supply Flashlights
Hand out flashlights with fresh batteries to your participants. This will make it much easier for them to navigate and help assure their safety. Look for inexpensive ones in the Halloween seasonal department at your local discount stores.
Supply a Halloween Bag
Give each team some type of sack or bag to put in the items as they are found. Be creative and have them decorated Halloween-style.
Take Pictures
Take pictures of your teams before they leave. If your team members are teenagers or adults, give each team a disposable camera and tell them you need at least 5 pictures as part of the list. They can be of any part of their hunt that they choose -- or have the entire list be of specific items that you have chosen. These could be items hard to bring back, such as a scarecrow or huge pumpkin.
Award Prizes
Present prizes to the winning teams. How many places you want to award is your choice, but the teams will all put forth effort so consider a cool grand prize for first place and unique gag gifts for the other teams. This way everybody wins something.
Make a Scrapbook
Assemble a scrapbook with the pictures you receive back and document any special events that occur during the hunt. Write the year, the winner(s) and prizes. Have your photos on display for next year's Halloween party and bring back some ghoulish memories.

How to Make a Scarecrow

halloween-scarecrow

Traditionally, scarecrows were created to keep crows away from farmer's crops. The appearance of a person in the cornfield or garden would, ideally, trick the crows into thinking that someone was guarding the tasty food that was growing beneath them.

Today, scarecrows are also used as a decorative item that appear mostly in the fall. Halloween scarecrows are quite common, but you can also set up a pretty fall display with a scarecrow or two and a few bales of hay or straw.

Making a scarecrow is quite simple, and a lot of fun for the whole family. Definitely get the kids involved and make it a group project. For something really fun, let each family member create their own scarecrow in their image, and then display your scarecrow family prominently in front of your house.

You don't have to use traditional outfits for your scarecrows. They can be dressed in old suits or formal wear, or even dressed up in costumes! Make both male and female scarecrows if you'd like. Hang them up on bamboo stakes, or arrange them on your lawn furniture, on hay bales, or even your front steps. Use your imagination to make your scarecrow a truly individual craft.

For each scarecrow, you'll need:
•two bamboo poles, one 4-feet long and another 6-feet long (for stake, if using)
•twine
•florist wire
•safety pins
•glue
•long-sleeved shirt
•long pants or overalls (jeans are commonly used)
•socks or boots
•gloves (either winter gloves or work gloves can be used)
•yarn or straw for hair, if desired
•hat
•pillowcase (without a pattern)
•waterproof paint and paintbrushes
•old newspaper, pillow stuffing, or straw to stuff clothing
•accessories, such as bandanas, costume jewelry, or glasses (optional)
Place the 4-foot bamboo pole across the longer pole, about one and a half feet down from the top. Secure in place by wrapping the cross point with twine and tying tightly. Set aside.

Paint the scarecrow's face onto the pillowcase. Besides paint, you can add glitter, makeup, felt or fabric cutouts, or use magic markers to add detail and decoration. Set pillowcase aside to allow the paint to dry completely.

Using twine, tie off the ends of the shirt sleeves and the cuffs of the pants. Using your choice of stuffing, stuff the shirt and pants. Likewise, stuff the gloves and socks and tie off the ends securely. Attach the gloves and socks to the sleeves and pant legs with safety pins or florist wire, or tie them on with twine. If you're using boots, attach them to the socks or pant legs with shoelaces or pins.

When the paint on the pillowcase head is dry, stuff the pillowcase and firmly tie off the end of the case with twine, leaving at least a couple of inches of fabric hanging down. Attach the head to the top of the shirt with wire or safety pins, tucking the ends of the pillowcase inside the shirt to prevent stuffing from escaping.

Using glue or wire, attach yarn or loose straw to the top of the scarecrow's head for hair. Place the hat on top and secure firmly with safety pins. Make sure the hat won't blow off the scarecrow if the weather turns windy.

Add extra touches like a bandana tied around the neck, or a pair of sunglasses tied on. Use glue, twine, or florist wire where necessary to secure loose adornments.

If you're using a stake, firmly press the bottom end of the bamboo stake into the ground, deep enough so that it won't blow over. Tie the scarecrow to the stake at the neck and waist with twine. Use florist wire to secure the scarecrow to the bamboo if necessary. Stretch the arms out along the shorter length of bamboo and tie the wrists to the pole with twine.

Alternatively, arrange your scarecrow in a lawn chair, bales of hay, or anywhere you'd like to place him (or her!). At the end of the season, store your scarecrow in a dry place in your home to use again and again.

Tip: If you're not hanging your scarecrow on a stake, you can use a hollowed-out, carved or painted pumpkin as the head.

Creating a Halloween Garden

halloween-decoration

Halloween is a fun time for kids and adults alike. If you want to create a Halloween garden that tends to be a little macabre, consider creating a Gothic garden.

Turn your Yard into Creepsville

Instantly transform your current garden into a Gothic garden by adding a few accessories, such as a moon dial and gargoyles. Place a few concrete urns along a garden path or driveway and create a gate by using a panel of wrought iron. Spooky metal-ware can be purchased at garden centers and novelty stores, as can screaming masks that appear to drip blood and CDs of ghostly voices. Use these things to create a chilling effect near your door. Add a resin coffin and a few tombstones to turn your garden into a graveyard.

Creepy Creatures

Creepy creatures are a must for a Halloween Gothic garden. The perfect spooky creatures are bats. They will send chills up the spines of your visitors and they should be welcome in all gardens because they eat beneficial insects. In order to attract bats to our garden, grow plants that will attract night-flying insects. Remember to provide a roosting area for bats. You can make your own bat roost, or purchase one at your local garden center or online. Search the Internet for plans to make your own bat house. If you live in the South, don’t prune cabbage palm. These make great roosts for bats.

Garden Plants for Bats

Plants to grow to attract night-flying insects that bats will enjoy include cornflower, phlox, salvia, silene, spearmint and stock.

Toads

Toads love slugs and they will give your garden a warty appearance. Provide a water source where toads can lay eggs and raise their young. Also provide a toad house for shelter. A loose stack of rocks in a moist area is sufficient or prop an old flowerpot up on a rock or stick. Having toads in the garden is said to bring the homeowner good luck.

Spiders

Your Gothic garden wouldn’t be complete without a few resident spiders. These creatures are a great source of pest control. When you find them in your garden, leave them be. Don’t kill them. Spider webs lend a spooky effect and are perfect for the Gothic garden.

Praying Mantis

Praying mantis is welcome in a Gothic garden. They are strictly carnivorous and will eat non-beneficial insects. Some garden centers and nurseries sell praying mantis eggs. Attach the egg cases to twigs and branches that are approximately one foot above the ground. It will take the eggs about eight weeks to hatch in warm weather. Each praying mantis egg case will produce about 200 insects, so you won’t need many.

Snakes

Snakes can be both a blessing and a deterrent. They consume rodents, which are good, but they also eat frogs and toads. Be sure any snake that takes up residence in your garden is of the non-poisonous variety. To attract snakes to your garden provide a rock, wood or rubble pile. It won’t be long until at least one takes up residence.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies are beautiful creatures. They cannot hurt humans, but they are frightening to some people. Dragonflies are beneficial insects that feed on mosquitoes. They also bring color to a garden. Attract dragonflies to your property by establishing a moving source of water. This could be as simple as installing a portable fountain. Place stakes in the yard so dragonflies will have a perch where they can rest. Remember, bug zappers will kill dragonflies and other beneficial insects, as will pesticides.

Ladybugs

At one time ladybugs were considered to be both holy and magical creatures. People today associate ladybugs with good luck. They love to feast on aphids and other non-beneficial insects. Like praying mantis, ladybugs can be purchased at garden centers and nurseries. They can be stored in the refrigerator when they aren’t needed and released at any time. Ladybugs are always thirsty, so mist the garden with a fine spray before releasing them in the early evening.
Once you have completed your Gothic garden, you will see the dramatic impact that the accessories and creatures will make on your visitors. Your Halloween Gothic garden will be the talk of the neighborhood and people will flock to your yard to experience some real thrills and chills. Happy Halloween!

Affordable Halloween Ornaments

halloween-ornaments

You do not have to be a good crafter to be able to make many great Halloween crafts that will make your holiday joyful. Halloween suggests pictures of spooky ghosts, black cats, dark witches, and flying bats.

You can recreate some of these images with fun and simple crafts.

The best part about making Halloween crafts is that the whole family can make them and it can give you some time to spend together. Lots of Halloween crafts can be done by almost any age child. For instance, your toddler can help out and learn new skills like cutting, drawing, and coloring.

Of course, you need some crafting supplies from the store. Here is the basic craft equipment needed:

- Several craft paintings: black, white, orange, etc. (pots and spraying cans)
- Gold and silver paint (spraying cans)
- Colored pipe cleaners
- Black, white, silver and gold markers

Obviously, most homes already have basic craft supplies like scissors, tape and glue.

So, let's begin: it is going to be fun!

Spiders

To make these spiders, you need an egg carton.
Cut all the egg cups.
Paint them black.
Paint their eyes with white or orange paint.
Make four small holes on each side of the spiders.
Insert a black or colored pipe cleaner in each hole and stick or glue them to the spider.
Give the shape you want to the pipe cleaners

Pumpkin boxes

Find as many small pumpkin plastic containers as you want.
Fill them with candies.
Voila! Treats are ready to be given to kids who will ring on your bell on Halloween Eve.

Colored Pumpkins

Here is a very special idea that will allow you to renew your Halloween ornaments while saving a lot of money. You probably already have ceramic pumpkins. Rather buying new Halloween ornaments, paint your old ones according to your needs: gold or silver paint for a luxurious decoration, for example.

You may also want to paint them in black or white. With a black, white, silver or gold marker, draw some shapes on these new pumpkins such as black cat, white witch, black mansion...

Kids love bright colors so you can paint your pumpkins in several different bright colors such as orange, green, blue, red, yellow, etc. Draw Halloween figures on these pumpkins. For teenagers decoration, paint pumpkins with metallic colors, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, and so on.

Pumpkin Jar

If you already have one or more, fill a glass jar with small plastic or ceramic pumpkins; alternate pumpkins with maple berries and leaves.

 Do-it-yourself Halloween Lights

Here is an almost free Halloween craft! Paint small jars in black, white and orange. Draw some Halloween shapes on them and insert a tea light candle in each jar. For instance, paint a white jar, draw Scream murderer's eyes and mouth and voila, you have an original ghost light. Place the Halloween candles on a black tray, insert mini pumpkins, maple berries and leaves, etc.

If you have larger jars, you may paint them as well and pour in Christmas lights.

Halloween Candelabra

Paint candelabra with black paint.
Add orange candles.
Hang cobwebs on the candelabra for a spooky Halloween effect!

Halloween Centrepiece

You will need to use a bread basket in order to make this item.
Fill it with some maple leaves.
Add cobweb, mini pumpkins, spiders...
You may keep the basket for Thanksgiving: you will only have to replace cobweb and spiders by grapes and pine cones.

Halloween Tree

Put bare branches in a vase.
Paint small Christmas tree balls black, white, and orange.
Draw Halloween shapes on them.
Hang the balls on the branches.
You may also make your own Halloween tree ornaments such as ghosts, black cat, witches, and spiders cut out cardboard. Paint them and hang them on the tree.

Tip: make a uncommon Halloween garland with popcorn painted orange.

Witch Hat

If you still have a pointy black hat from last year, reuse it by sticking Halloween items such as fake hands, spiders, cobwebs or other spooky items and pin it to the front door.

Happy Halloween!

ghost-decorations

Give your guests a chill thrill with a Ghosts and Goblins party! Improvise your garage or your backyard into either a haunted house or a scary cemetery. Remember, the party should not be anything less than frightening.

Invitations

1. Make masks from stiff cardboard, cut to fit the faces. Decorate the masks with puff paints, sequins, stickers and feathers to turn them into whatever you like- Frankestein, Wolfman, Freddy, Jason, foe example. Write the party details on the other side of the masks. Attach an elastic string through holes on either side of each mask. Send the masks to guests for an inviting scare. Have the guests wear wear their masks to the party.

2. For added fun, fill the invitation envelopes with a few plastic bugs, ants, or gummy worms.

Graveyard Cake

1. Bake a chocolate cake; cool.

2. Top with softened chocolate wafer cookies to look like finely ground dirt and sprinkle over ice-cream.

3. Stick lolly snakes into the cake, half-in and half-out.

Costumes

1. Ask the invitees to come dressed as a favorite monster, creepy creature or bad guy.

2. Award prizes for all kinds of costume categories, such as Scariest, Funniest, Hardest to Make, Hardest to Wear, Most Creative, Most Authentic, Most Disgusting and so on.

3. When the kids arrive, provide them with sheets of colored crepe paper, tape, string and a stapler, and let them design their own costumes.

Decorations

1. Create a haunted house in the garage or party room. Cover the windows with black paper and set up scary stations. Have the guests weave through the haunted house one at a time.

2. Set up a Mad Scientist Laboratory. Have someone dress as a Frankenstein monster and lie on a table among bubbling concoctions (use dry ice and colored water in clear bowls). Add kitchen utensils, such as tongs, basters and a garlic press, to serve as bizarre scientific instruments.

3. Make a Deadbody Storehouse. Dress friends as accident victims, with torn clothes and fake blood and scars. Have them lie on the floor and come to life from to time, by sitting up, grabbing a passing foot or something.

4. Make a Witches Cauldron. Dress the witches in long, grey wigs and black dresses, color their fingernails black, black out a tooth or two and have them stir a cauldron with a broom. Inside the cauldron place wet noodles or jelly.

Creepy Party Decorations

You could paint the face like the face of a famous celeb - dead, or use masks of a skull, a witch or a fanged red eyed vampire. Or you could use an all white robe and white long gloves. Ask your guests to come dressed in creepy characters according to their choice.
Sling spooky masks from the walls. You could also fill your party room with elegant china and silver, candle bras, trays filled with fake pearls and jewels, drapes of fancy fabric from the fabric store. Use candles and soft lights, or shaded lamps in a way that creates longer than usual shadows. The party will indeed be creepy with the use of colored lightings, potted plants covered with dark colored robes. You can also use candles for a creepier ambience. Ask your guests to talk in a very soft or whispering voice for the first ten minutes or so. You could also use a creepy music as a final touch.
Serve food in trays and on tables that match with the party mood. And arrange for some competition like story telling, the spooky ones of course, and award the scariest one. Or a separate 'ghost-as-you-like' costume contest. Finally make sure that everyone leaves the place content with a fun filled heart.

Scary Party Recipes

Scary party recipes help make a Halloween party great! From appetizers that resemble bugs and reptiles to cakes shaped like intestines, scary party ideas add eerie flavor to traditional costume parties.
Halloween parties are fun for all ages. Younger children get scared more easily, so they are entertained eating chicken fingers with ketchup nails, witch cupcakes, and drinking blue lemonade. As kids get older and start enjoying the scary side of Halloween, party foods can become more gruesome. Pizza can be decorated with "body parts", calzones can be split open to show marinara sauce oozing out with sausage ("blood and guts"), and desserts can be cakes shaped and frosted to resemble skeletons, tombstones, or skulls.

halloween party recipes

With all of the sugar Halloween brings, it is important to add appetizers and meals into the party menu that will help curb the sugar highs. A popular scary party appetizer is bat wings, which are simply chicken wings blackened with Cajun spices or bbq sauce. A fun and tasty treat of Cheese Ball Pumpkins from Betty Crocker is satisfying and tasty. To make Cheese Ball Pumpkins, simply roll level tablespoons of cold packed smoked cheese into balls, and use a toothpick to make pumpkin ridges. Scatter broken peanuts around pumpkins, and take pretzel halves and stick into the pumpkin ball for stems.

cheese-ball-pumpkink-ideas

Finger Punch is a Halloween party drink favorite, and easy to make. The combination of juices used depends on preference, but it is best to use cranberry juice for the fingers. To create the floating hand, pour cranberry juice into a plastic glove and tie tightly at end. Place in freezer until frozen, and add to punch bowl when ready to serve. Guests will love watching as the finger slowly melts and fingers break off.

The treats below require no baking just some readymade frosting and some Little Debbie's or Moon Pies.  Choose the readymade cakes of your liking (below are Little Debbie Squares) and readymade frosting and black jell frosting for the eyes.  Frosting will need to be heated just a little to make it easier to work with so microwave for about 10 seconds depending on your microwave.  Take a ziploc bag and fill it with the white frosting.  Squeeze it to the bottom of the bag to one corner and cut a very small hole in that corner.  Squeeze the frosting out slowly creating your design.  Use the black jell frosting for the eyes.  You can draw pumpkins as well by adding a little orange food coloring to white frosting.  As we get near Halloween there will be orange cakes and cookes sold at the stores that will but fun to decorate as well.  This is a great project for a class of youns students.
